Little Boy Test Logic

Hunter took the reading part of the test on Tuesday. He had a good attitude and finished the test.  I am happy that he feels good about it.  Later he told me there were 40 questions on the test.  He got done with the test in 40 minutes…  Come to find out he didn’t read the stories.  No wonder he got such a low score.  He read the questions, then tried to find the answers or guessed.  Mostly guessed.  Little boy test logic.  I can guess? OK!

Hunter said, “I did what you told me to do.”  I told him it is better to guess than leave a question blank –AFTER all the other tips.  I should have known something was up when he said, “Why are you teaching me to cheat?”  At the time I said, “I’m not, I’m showing you some test strategies.”  I hate this test format because you don’t have to read everything before answering questions.  Have a kid read then narrate, and I’ll be impressed.

At this point, I have to laugh because he is in third grade and this isn’t the SAT, but I do need to teach the boy how to take a test between now and then.  He’s made big progress with reading since last May.  I really am proud of him.  I think we will step up our lessons between now and this coming May.  I know he can do it.  We will have to cut back on some of our activities to finish strong.

He takes the math test today.
